Because for all the political and economic bluster, unless you can attain an income level twice what you use you're doomed to the same outcome.

How many gen.x'ers on here actually own their own home outright ?

Baby Boomers. Last generation to be able to buy their homes outright without having to resort to insurance policies or remortgage.
Something no other generation is likely to manage

I see you like in the UK. Here in the US, things aren't quite as depressing as on your little island. We have our issues, but wow. Sorry your life is so miserable.
