Say honestly did I make it a bit awkward by asking her like that?
So in Church Street area of our city Bangalore in India, I initiated conversation with this woman in this Cafe. So I was kinda confused whether she is an East Asian woman or a North East Indian as many tend to look similar. She was friendly and I said her I am just trying to socialize with new people. But I asked her "Are you actually from Darjeeling side?" Then she answered "No I am from Japan". I asked this question tho because I was just confused. Sadly in India, some people do discriminate and even mock North East Indians in their own countriy(India) calling them chinky, Chinese or momo. So I just didn't want any misunderstanding and didn't want her to feel discriminated by asking her which country she is from if she by chance happened to be from North East India. My hometown is Siliguri in West Bengal close to Darjeeling so I do share this home ground context with NE Indians. But after she said she is from Japan, I replied "Oh Japan? I am sorry actually my hometown is close to Darjeeling so I just got confused". But she smiled and said "Its okay I understand". Then we talked a bit, exchanged names and eventually ended the conversation with me saying her it was nice meeting her and she said the same and told her to enjoy her coffee. But what do you feel? Do you feel it was still strange asking if she was from Darjeeling even though she is Japanese? Or is it normal in the Indian context?
