I never mean to offend anybody
But I want people to understand that there are some serious tunnel visions within the psychology field.
Most therapists (that I’ve had) I noticed they’ve all default back to what they learned in school so it’s like they are not actively learning like somebody who is in a finance field or a business field because things are always changing in business. If you are in psychology you don’t ever evolve. So a lot of times when you are in therapy, it will feel like your experience doesn’t line up with the therapist’s framework because you will often get dismissed, reframed, or pathologized. There’s little openness to perspectives that fall outside of what their textbooks say.
And literally everything that they were taught in school is 20 years behind. Like the DSM 5 is at least 30 years behind whenever it was published and my therapist had the DSM 5 in his office. I know it takes time to gather data and years to train people and years to approve changes because there’s a lot of changes from the DSM 5 and the DSM 4 but that probably took like 10 years to do 👁👄👁 so basically whenever the DSM five came out, none of that stuff even exist existed anymore. Society had already moved on and developed new mental illnesses.
Like 20 years ago, people were depressed due to the chemical imbalance in their brains. It was all internally but today people are depressed because the systems around them are designed to keep them financially stuck. And my therapist could not understand that👁👄👁 or that no amount of reframing he put me through could ever changed the fact that wages don’t keep up, housing is unaffordable, and stability requires constant out-of-the-box thinking just to survive. And when you can’t keep up with all that you become depressed has nothing to do with anything internally like how it was 20, 30 years ago.
So again, I can say that therapy does not evolve like other fields do like how I mentioned in business and finance your brain is constantly learning something new every single day. It’s not fair to me to say that therapist are ignorant, but I sure do think my therapist was. Because he did not want to learn from any of his clients because in his field, he is allowed to stay in the same model that are literally centuries old! And I’m not saying that he doesn’t get training once in a while, but like he needs to be getting training daily because things change daily OK, a one hour seminar on depression every two years is not good enough to be updated on depression.
So that’s why so many people like me don’t like therapist and why we don’t connect is because we can be talking about real-world instability, and the therapist responds with tools meant for an entirely different era 👁👄👁
