Homeowner Struggles

I had to have the water turned off this evening because of a broken pipe under the house. I'll get a plumber, hopefully first thing tomorrow. Isn't life wonderful?

I do not technically own the house I live in.

I know this though - people think it is SO great to have home ownership but there are just as many drawbacks. They talk about equity but then that equity eventually goes to pay for things like major repairs anyways.

No matter how someone slices it, we are going to be paying through the nose our entire lives to live somewhere whether renting or "owning" a house.

Then once the house is paid off and we retire, our savings and profits from the home sale get hoover'ed up by the retirement home we move to.

Life is wonderful. 馃槵

@CestManan Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if hubby and I should sell the house and move into the small apartments across our alley, which I think we'll do eventually anyway.
Everything you said is so true.

But rent is so expensive and it goes up with cost of living. A mortgage doesn't. @CestManan
DemureDeb56-60, F
@Spoiledbrat Yes rent can be very expensive. At least our house is paid for
JustafantasyM
@Spoiledbrat mortgage changes every time it's due for renewal, or every payment if you have a variable rate
SpoiledbratF
@Justafantasy I don't know anyone who has a variable rate but it doesn't go up tge way rent does. You can pay it off.
JustafantasyM
@Spoiledbrat if I could pay it off I would, mine isn't variable as I like stability
SpoiledbratF
@Justafantasy I'm sorry if you're having trouble but I meant it can be paid off. Not like rent. Rent is forever.

@CestManan you nailed it right! The bad stuff in life seems to far outweigh the good.

@Spoiledbrat

Depending where you live taxes can be higher then rent .... that's why I'm moving after retirement
JustafantasyM
@pdockal condo fees the cost of a mortgage itself, building maintenance, time doing yard work all add up
CestManan46-50, F
@Spoiledbrat @DemureDeb I mean if the house is paid for then that is an advantage.
SpoiledbratF
@CestManan And that was my point. Obviously, why buy property if it's not going to get paid off eventually.
DemureDeb56-60, F
@CestManan Yes it is an advantage. It just that my job doesn't pay much. I should be okay
