Like my first impulse was to go on about how we 'can' actually remove the speck from our brothers or sister's eye, while we have a plank in ours. You know? Like the mechanic with the crappy car, or the the cleaner with the messy house, ....

Nah! I don't think you will do a good job picking out the speck when your vision is clouded. About the mechanic and housecleaner, well those people are PAID to do a good job. They'll get sued if they screw up.
