What happens if your spouse wants to get a divorce but you don’t

JoePourMan · 61-69, M
Two have to agree to get married, but a divorce only needs one to want it.
AllAboutLaffs · 70-79, M
Marriages fail for any number of reasons .... so first step is marriage counseling to discover those reasons and any possible remedies. Failing that, get an attorney to protect your interests. You can't make them stay and it would be pure hell if you tried.

@AllAboutLaffs This is good advice - first try. But if that fails, there is not much you can do to prevent it.

You get divorced
Depending on the laws where the couple lives, one partner can contest the divorce in court. Unless assets are significant, it's likely court and attorney fees will cost as much or more than you stand to gain.

Not a good situation to be in. Personally I’d like to know their reasons for feeling like divorce was an option. If they appear valid what else could one do but appease their wishes.

You get divorced. It just becomes a lot rougher for both people involved.

Will not be an issue in my case. I believe in live and let live.
