How can you be confused about gender

I mean you are either born male or female . Anything else is just mental illness right . I mean no matter how many surgeries they do you will still be the gender you were born as

Psychologically speaking, and yes I've had developmental and abnormal psychology a lot of things can happen that can affect the way a person perceives the way they view their own gender. This doesn't mean it's abnormal or wrong. It just is what it is.
