How can you be confused about gender

I mean you are either born male or female . Anything else is just mental illness right . I mean no matter how many surgeries they do you will still be the gender you were born as

When I was younger I thought I was a boy, from 4 years old. I don't know why but I never tried to be a girl either, gave me hard time growing up but I grew out of it and realized I can be me without changing my body.

Maybe I had a previous life in which I was a man and that's why I couldn't let it go. But who knows
