I think most people pay lip service to this, in certain situations. I understand why you see this as phony, but I see it as kindness.

There are times when the truth can only hurt and a few words, even insincere ones can give comfort. And what else are you going to do, if someone tells you that they are suffering in some way? Say I don't really care, don't bother me with your problems! ?

No, most people really don't care about all the ills that most others suffer through, but without that little buffer of polite insincerity, the world would be an even darker, crueler, place than it is, already.

I think it depends on the person and situation, but there are times when it’s necessary and courteous to lie. JMO @Serenitree
