Never ever. That's just annoying.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User It's honestly more perplexing to me than anything.
SW-User
@UndeadPrivateer What's perplexing about it? Its a reject product that got used anyway in the process of manufacturing.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User I just mean the failure point is kinda odd, I would've expected it to break in a different place than where it did.
SW-User
@UndeadPrivateer No. That's the point where the mouth of the tube gets attached to the body. It is not unusual. Quality check in that factory missed this piece out.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User The design of this tube looks like it has a solid hard flat collar and tip heat bonded on the tube with the other end just heat sealed. I've had the collar/tube join break in similar tubes,(at the "shoulder") but not at the tip.

This one just looks like a somewhat jagged break in what was solid plastic. Maybe got molded too thin, but I think @marsbar is onto something in that heat might've been a factor. The place where it broke is where the shearing force of turning the top would be focused, so if the plastic was brittle it'd make sense to break there. Pure speculation, though. I don't have eyes in the factory. :P

@UndeadPrivateer When factories manufacture, all these conditions are taken into account and they find the formula for making something that can withstand different conditions. Or, they'd mention it on the tube as a disclaimer.
If you'd placed 5 different tubes in the same condition, chances are not all 5 would have broken this way. So yeah, even if heat is a factor, it might not be the reason.
Factories do produce defective products and sometimes they do miss the QC check. It is not unknown.
I don't have eyes in the factory either. And I'm not even going to go extreme scientific on this. I am just sharing what I am aware happens in manufacturing process. It is not a totally unfamiliar process to me.

Disclaimer though: I may be totally wrong on that so yeah, go with the theories that seem right to you.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User I get the QC thing, it's possible. Just the thing does seem to be made of thermoplastic, which are quite prone to degradation from temperature changes. So it's a problem that could certainly be foreseen with the material, but not necessarily avoidable without increasing cost. Thermoplastics are cheap and easy to use.
SW-User
@UndeadPrivateer If what you're saying is true, they'd have a problem with all or almost all of their tubes and that would make news.
But yeah I don't know. :) Too early in the morning for my cogs to spin.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User Eh, thermoplastics being used in places they shouldn't isn't anything shocking. It happens all the time. They're cheap and simple to utilize so lots of companies do it to cut corners, and they generally feel nice in the hand so often people don't realize anything is wrong until it starts rapidly degrading under certain conditions. They have a certain give and smoothness to them that is quite reminiscent of far higher grade plastics.

AvE is a youtuber who does all kinds of teardowns on appliances and tools and you'd be shocked at how often he comes across thermoplastics in places where they really shouldn't be.
SW-User
@UndeadPrivateer Okay! One thing that occurred to me, right or wrong, is that manufacturing might be different in different countries.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User Yeah, we aren't exactly well known for stringent manufacturing regulations here. Not to mention all the highly questionable Asian imports.
SW-User
@UndeadPrivateer ha, I'm not surprised you watch AvE, if anyone ever wanted to know what Canadians sound like lol
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@SW-User He's an entertaining guy, lol.
