There was a recent study that showed that the vast majority of supposed 'possessions' are actually likely a result of viral meningitis caused by flus and meningococcal pneumonia brought on by colds. The brain damage and inflammation being what gives rise to strange behaviors like spasms, speaking in tongues, delusions, hallucinations, etc. An even smaller subset brought on by a very rare genetic disorder that causes the body's own immune system to start attacking the Central Nervous System, including the brain, and bringing on the same symptoms.
