That's a trade associated with forestry but rarely mentioned anywhere. I think quite a range of useful chemicals can be distilled from wood, as they were from coal.

@ArishMell That's true. This is not my grandfather's still, but his was much like it. Their products were lumped under the heading of "naval stores."
