Remembering the Wedding Party Musicians
They were a collection
of misfits and musicians
who could play like
all the people you admired
those who plucked guitars
and banged upon drums
and vocalized like rock stars
you get what I mean
They practised long hours
because they prided themselves
and they knew the importance
of what they did upon those
who married in their presence
all the beauty and the magic
and all the lasting memories
They dressed in formal attire
tuxes or tails and stylish ties
and shiny leather shoes
while the ladies who were elegant
and sophisticated and talented
were quite show-stoppers
All in all quite a gathering
They showed up in long limos
and sometimes in pick-up trucks
or small, worn cars or even taxis
As being responsible and dedicated
was an attribute and a fine quality
Inasmuch as they were popular
and booked months and even years
in advance
They drank cold wine or good alcohol
though in moderation it be told
They were permitted good breaks
whereupon they ate fine foods
And conversed with each other
as well as with honored guests
Even personally shaking hands
with the best men and kissing
the cheeks of the radiant brides
They were self-assured and confident
and even playful but not to a fault
and all the guests spoke positively
and warmly about these musicians
They were well-rewarded with stipends
and also with generous tips
as well as with more than a few
numbers scribbled upon napkins
or upon business cards
At the end of the morning
as weddings lasted well
into deep hours of the night
the musicians gathered up
their fine instruments
chatted on their ways out
of blessed churches or outside
nature venues and often remarked
upon the futures of the newlyweds
and upon members of the wedding
parties but not within earshot
of said people dressed still well
but some drunken or tired or both
Because love is something that
should last forever
and each of them believed in love
and each loved his or her jobs
and often they were immortalized
in photos or in memories
Because everyone remembers that
particular song at that particular time
And who doesn't love a fine wedding
And forever wishes and hope and
optimism and all the good things
like wedding cake too...
