The Audible Mix for the rest of September 2025

1. Great Expectations read by Simon Vance, leaves Plus at the end of the month, currently 14h 8m left .... Vance's voice is a delight to listen to, much of his recordings are leaving Plus, so i'll end up using credits for him in the future.

2. My Brilliant Friend read by Hilary Huber, nice voice, i had gotten the Neapolitan novels on audible long time ago but have only hit play recently, it's one of those rarities where a living author is up there with the greats, and no scandal sticking to them as far as i know. 7.5 hrs left at 1.5x.

3. The Brothers Karamazov -- the first in the complete Dostoevsky collection, i've listened to it in full before, read by David Rintoul and he does an amazing job, i'll surely be getting other recordings for this masterpiece with better translations. As with collections i can't say how long is left for each work in them.

4. Christian Science is the current one i'm on in the Mark Twain collection, he had such a sardonic wit about him, i recall our pastor in a former city we lived near by quoted him often.

5. Les Miserables -- 39hrs left in it, not expecting to finish till maybe November, Bill Homewood's voice in this recording is soothing with lots of bass.

6. The Story of My Life vol. 1 of Casanova read by Peter Wickham, it's in 3 volumes, and the 3rd isn't purchased yet, it's neat, and ties in with the other Wickham recordings i have which are:

7. The Anatomy of Melancholy and 8. The Decline of the West, i don't feel like typing here the times left for these but there's over 40 hours each, later on in the year.

9. War and Peace begins the Tolstoy collection to be finished around the time of Les Miserables.

10. Swann's Way has to be finished this month. But ya can't or shouldn't rush Proust.

11. The Count of Monte Cristo just 19 hours to go, surely will have to listen to this tale again soon.

12. A Short History of Decay read by Rick Adamson, 5 others he recorded for this my favorite thinker, books i'll be listening to over and over again.

13. Sense and Sensibility in the Jane Austen collection, delightfully read by Alison Larkin.

14. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire read with a loud and commanding voice by Charlton Griffin is a contender for favorite audiobook, gest in bed in the dark, i think the mice really like it too. To be completed by the end of the year. Also a doozie read by him are:

15. Parallel Lives and 16. The Iliad.

16. Barchester Towers will be next up in Trollope's series.

17. Huysmans' Against Nature is a short one that i should prescribe myself with before October, i love this decadent classic about a guy who floridly decorates his home and snobbily reads ancient authors and has a kind of ennui about it all.

Well this turns out to be less definitive as i thought it would be, but this gives an idea of what i'm furiously listening to these days. My 125 audiobooks post is where you'll be able to see in delayed fashion the countdown for each, and if anything is left unfinished will be finished in 2026, especially those long collections.
