Began newspaper career as printer's assistant on the Knoxville Chronicle. Bought Chattanooga Times at age 19 and transformed it into one of the South's leading newspapers. Bought a struggling New York Times at age 36 with a commitment to objective journalism, and transformed it into one of the greatest newspapers in the Nation.
