@PhilDeep in UK & Ireland it is tied to Easter. It is the fourth Sunday in Lent. You are supposed to visit your mother church, ie the one you were baptised in and also celebrate mothers in general.
More correctly we call it Mothering Sunday not Mother's Day although recently they've become interchangeable.
