Traitors and Convicts?
Wrong country - the original colonialists of the North American continent, and not only from Britain, chose to emigrate!

@ArishMell yes they did.. Mostly from here.. Then the British government of the time transported convicts to the " colonies" of Australia and America.. People as young as pre teens could be transported for stealing a loaf of bread in those days...

@braveheart21 I think Australia was the more usual one, but the penal code of the time was extremely severe.

@ArishMell sent to the colonies for stealing a loaf of bread... Men women and children.. .not a good time in British history

@braveheart21 Ity wasn't - but the case of the Tolpuddle Martyrs transported for an illegal oath of mutual support (not as you sometimes read or hear, for forming a trade-union) may have been one of the catalysts for that penalty being abolished.

@ArishMell possibly or just the time and costs involved made it too difficult.. .you know UK gov doesn't like to spend money lol

@braveheart21 Oh, I don't think it cost the country much money.
Their custody suite until a transprt-ship was available, was usually a semi-derelict hulk, and once there the convicts were sort of self-sufficient.
