I wonder about the diet in Holland in those days.
Rubens pained a lot of large female buttocks too.

Like the blanket (as if to catch any drips) but presumably male nudity was not considered acceptable unless in some sort of religious tableau.

@emmasfriend I think the ideal figure back then was just different. Instead of using filters to appear thin, maybe people asked painters to portray them as heavier.
