Maoi's brand of Communism was also a catastrophe, and China never was a satellite of the USSR.

Deng Xiaoping took China down the capitalist road, as his Maoist critics correctly pointed out. China did it much more efficiently than Russia and became a de facto fascist state.

@Thinkerbell Russian implementation of *everything* is catastrophic. That's my point. Currently (and for the last 30 years) they're a far right ultraconservative fascist state and their economy is demonstrably worse than the USSR. And, suspiciously enough, I don't hear we should stay away from far-right fascist conservatism because it's failing or it's failed in Russia.

China is the second world economy (likely to become first within the end of the decade; I don't see the US in its current form maintaining the primacy inherited from the past century for long), I'd hardly say their system has been a failure. If anything you could argue that it's not exactly textbook communism, but more a form of statalism. Also if we say they're fascist we're pretty much negating they're left-wing to begin with, by the very base definition of fascist; they're definitely authoritarian but I don't think they qualify as fascist.

There's also plenty of capitalistic/conservative countries that I wouldn't move to even if gifted a house in, being a dystopian hellhole isn't a prerogative of any specific economic system. The most livable countries in the world are those who adopt a mixed pragmatic approach. Those that insist of wanting a pure implementation of either, almost as if it was a religion, regardless of whether it's socialism or capitalism, end up becoming an unlivable mess where the very things they fear about the opposite system become their own reality.

See for example capitalists scared of losing private property under socialism losing it under capitalism, where the top 0.001% are gearing up to own everything and rent it to the rest. And failing to see the irony.
