NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO)-2 satellite, launched in 2014 and considered the “gold standard” for atmospheric CO2 measurements, faces termination orders from the Trump administration despite being fully functional. The $750 million satellite monitors global carbon dioxide levels, tracks photosynthesis, and supports climate research including the Paris Agreement. Democrats call the move “illegal” since Congress already funded the missions. NASA employees confirm they’re creating termination plans for OCO-2 and the ISS-attached OCO-3 instrument. Terminating OCO-2 would waste the investment since it would burn up in orbit, while maintenance costs only $15 million annually.

@helenS Occam’s, There are only observations and theories. The best theory is the simplest ine that explains all the known observations. As soon as an observation is made that disproves the pervious theory, a new best theory has ot be formulated. Occams razor is self asserting because it is the simplest theory of what science is. Can you find a thought experiment that disproves it. I will pst this as a wider conversation actually. Can anybody logically disprove it ?
@Captain I think the point is that the humanities use the word "theory" totally different from how we use it science. In the humanities, something is "only" a theory, amongst other theories. In this sense of the word, there are no theories in science at all.
@helenS Yes I can see that now you mention it, and Occam was quite clear he was talking about scientific method and enquiry. IN science there are also lots of theories believe me, but we have an accepted view (normally) coming with the endorsement of some quango like the Royal Society, which is probably 10 years behind where research is. A bit like Fake and Fortune where these quangos are just “jobs for the boys and girls"
