Well, a researcher out of some US school on or near the Gulf of Mexico did a study quite a while ago, taking cores of some of the reefs when they shut down due to warming back then...
And his results included the fact that he never saw any of his sampled corals EVER shut-down at any point before he took the samples.
That is one of the many converging lines of evidence supporting global warming.
