Doubts about climate change?

Here’s what got that seed of doubt sown. 30 years ago A bold plan was hatched Americas oil industry execs and a top PR guru. An $850,000 a day contract was at stake meaning it was in the oil industry’s best interests to create seeds of doubt about climate change.
A bit like the NRA telling supporters that guns don’t kill people.

Obviously the plan worked because climate changed doubters are everywhere today. Sadly actual climate change is wacking us in the face every hour of every day.

Even a former CalTech Physics prof., Dr. Steven E. Koonin, has been an anti-climate change person...smh.

@SomeMichGuy A physicist may not understand climate dynamics any more than a climate scientist understands physics.
@windinhishair ...a lot of climate scientists come out of Physics, and understanding weather means you need to understand fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical physics, and absorption/transmission of light through gases...possibly some chemistry...

But anyone who paid attention in a decent undergraduate Physics program should be able to understand climate change and, with other reading (perhaps) papers on it. He has a BS in Physics from CalTech, and a theoretical PhD from MIT; in fact, his 1975 PhD is available online at MIT as a PDF download:

He's been interested in computational aspects of physics. His PhD was about trying to move the modeling of the nuclear "fluid" from a classical fluid to something which would incorporate more of the quantum mechanical behavior...so he was already deeply in fluid mechanics, computation, and even more.

My reading of the problem with his critique of climate science is that it was based in part on older studies, and he has been unwilling to look at the best data and the consilience of different types of data...

The wikipedia article has some pointers:

I met him long ago when he was a prof. at CalTech.

@Oster1 But his opinion is an outlier and has been soundly debunked. The wikipedia article has some good starting references.

@SomeMichGuy Hey Dumbass, send money to Zelensky, OK?
@Oster1 Go process some food.
Oster1 · M
@SomeMichGuy No, process your sorry leftist ass!
@Oster1 Koonin is an outlier in his opinions about climate changes.

Those have been debunked.

The consensus opinion of scientists in the field is opposed to Koonin.

Process that.

@Oster1 Puck, you have been drinking heavily again. Hopefully you are sleeping it off this morning.
@SomeMichGuy He's definitely out of step with his fellow professors of physics. The American Physical Society strongly backs climate science and the conclusion of AGW. So does the American Chemical Society, a similar organization of chemists.

[quote]The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.

If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.

Because the complexity of the climate makes accurate prediction difficult, the APS urges an enhanced effort to understand the effects of human activity on the Earth’s climate, and to provide the technological options for meeting the climate challenge in the near and longer terms. The APS also urges governments, universities, national laboratories and its membership to support policies and actions that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

@Oster1 Sweet Oster with the potty mouth? lol

@windinhishair Nope, just a charming sweet, Oster, as always.
