There are too many people on this planet for long term survival and we need advanced technology to solve existing issues of pollution etc.

The spending may not be to your liking, but it is logical.

Some might suggest we have entire industries who only care about life and the environment when they face legal pressure to do so. Then we have a group of lobbyists, lawyers, and other madmen trying to find a way they don't have to in search of profit, while we have other notable actors trying to colonize other planets because we know we are making this one uninhabitable. You make enough people struggle, it's sad what they will ask for.

And imagine we can solve the world's problems by establishing colonies on Mars.

Well, some imagine that... escapism to the nth degree.

Mars' surface is a cold, arid desert under an atmosphere lethal to us; and a long way away.

How about them using their imaginations to solve terrestrial problems, terrestrially?
