Perfect movie nostalgia

When I was young there was a black and white movie on television every Saturday, mostly American and often a winner of an Oscar. I can still remember many of these movies. Although a John Ford movie was often on, there were also Orson Welles ones. I only mention these two directors but you get the idea. I still can remember The Third Man. The actors in it were perfect, especially the rather always underrated Trevor Howard. Who, I hear you say, well, that's your loss indeed

The Third Man is one of my very favorite movies.

@Thinkerbell I'm looking at that Holly Martin generation that had indeed clear blue water clarity in their morals with load of foundness. That there is what it means to be now. We've almost all become Harry Lime

"Governments talk about the people and the proletariat, and I talk about the suckers and the mugs; it's all the same thing. They have their 5-year plans and so have I."

@Thinkerbell What can I respond to that right now? As an historian I'm daily confronted with certain big names in that subject matter talking absolute nonsense. Nial Fergunson, Andrew Roberts, Victor Davis Hanson, etc.

One only has to look at how politicians of all stripes feather their nests and become millionaires many times over. Yes, even Bernie Sanders.

@Thinkerbell Perhaps, but I'm really guarding myself against cynicism and disillusionment. Andrew Roberts was created a life peer as Baron Roberts of Belgravia on 1 November 2022. I'm sure that all the good historians that I can name will never achieve that.

Martin Gilbert was also a British historian and academic. He was the author of 88 books, including works on Winston Churchill, the 20th century, and Jewish history including the Holocaust. He only got a knighthood

@val70

It seems you are expressing disillusionment on how historians are recognized for their work.

I agree that Lord Roberts is overrated. I am not particularly impressed by his historical insights.

@Thinkerbell I'm not disillusioned about historians. I critize them
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@val70

I said you seem disillusioned about how historians are recognized, one becoming a baron, while another only being knighted.

@Thinkerbell That's only reality. Nothing to do with either me being an historian or anything more than that. It's politics. I can give you my views but they are indeed mine
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@val70

"That's only reality."

Now you are sounding like the Harry Lime quote I posted above.

@Thinkerbell Look at that black spot there. It's bigger than the other
