why does the tv have so many advertisements now

i'm really sick of them, ads on every channel..you can't get into watching anything now, because the long ad breaks keep interrupting...it was never like this in the 80s, the era i grew up in.

I haven't owned a TV in 17 years. Commercials are a big reason why.
