Frail Phil Collins, 71, sits during performance in last Genesis show in Paris while son Nic, 20, plays drums - as singer battles painful health condit

Phil's health problems started with an injured vertebrae in his upper back in 2009.

The injury was sustained during a show and left him with cripplingly painful nerve damage

The musician lost the feeling in his fingers following surgery and could only play drums for the band, as he did previously, if the sticks were taped to his hands.

In his 2016 autobiography he revealed he'd struggled with alcohol abuse after his retirement and the following year he stated he was a type 2 diabetic and had received treatment in a hyperbaric chamber after a diabetic abscess developed on his foot and became infected.

He also suffers from a condition called foot drop after a back operation, leaving him needing a stick to help him walk
Did you see the picture of him from that performance. It was so weird, doesn’t look like him. But I’ll admit, I do forget that everyone else ages right along with me.
@nonsensiclesnail yeah he looks to be in tough shape

It's so so heart breaking to grow old and decrepit.

Genesis will always remain my most favorite band and the one I listen to the most. It's sad to see Phil in this condition but none of us are getting any younger. Nice to see his son carrying on as a drummer, like Jon Bonham's son did.

Time to retire. He fought a good fight, had a good life. One of the greatest.

Ashame he can't afford to retire

@MarineBob It's never about affording to - when your passion is playing music then, when you can't, it's hard to cope with. There's been numerous suicides in recent years due to the musician's inability to play their music to a level that they once did.

I recall reading something about Keith Emmerson, of E.L.P. Not my music, but he had hand nerve damage and couldn't play keyboards so he shot himself.

Sad way to end, but wholly understandable. It's not about music, more about finding a new role that they feel comfortable with in life.
