42 ... The ultimate answer to everything

Happy anniversary... October 1979!
And if you don't understand, that's ok... Just keep banging the rocks together!
Douglas Adams was a comic genius
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-three million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea...

This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

And so the problem remained; lots of people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.
@ElwoodBlues I quote him when talking about vegan Sheese.
It tastes almost, but not quite, entirely unlike cheese...
@SW-User Remember the cow at Restaurant at the End of the Universe?
"Something off the shoulder perhaps?" suggested the animal, "braised in a white wine sauce?"

"Er, your shoulder?" said Arthur in a horrified whisper.

"But naturally my shoulder, sir," mooed the animal contentedly, "nobody else's is mine to offer."

Zaphod leapt to his feet and started prodding and feeling the animal's shoulder appreciatively.

"Or the rump is very good," murmured the animal. "I've been exercising it and eating plenty of grain, so there's a lot of good meat there."
Just pointing out that “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy“ was in fact 12 episodes of a comedy radio series on the BBC before it ever got converted into a book.

What do you get if you multiply six by nine?

Actually in base 13 it is 42

"When confronted with this, the author claimed that it was a mere coincidence, stating that "I may be a sorry case, but I don't write jokes in base 13.""

Good grief, it can't be that long ago can it? Makes me realise how old I am!

I do study history but mainly UK Monarch, reigns, wars and date of events.

I'd be interested to know more about 42?

@Sazzio ... and hitchhiking ..
@Sazzio A race of people called the Magratheans decided to build a computer to answer the ultimate question:
“O Deep Thought computer," he said, "the task we have designed you to perform is this. We want you to tell us...." he paused, "The Answer."
"The Answer?" said Deep Thought. "The Answer to what?"
"Life!" urged Fook.
"The Universe!" said Lunkwill.
"Everything!" they said in chorus.
Deep Thought paused for a moment's reflection.
"Tricky," he said finally.
"But can you do it?"
Again, a significant pause.
"Yes," said Deep Thought, "I can do it."
"There is an answer?" said Fook with breathless excitement.
"Yes," said Deep Thought. "Life, the Universe, and Everything. There is an answer. But, I'll have to think about it."
...
Fook glanced impatiently at his watch.
“How long?” he said.
“Seven and a half million years,” said Deep Thought.
Lunkwill and Fook blinked at each other.
“Seven and a half million years...!” they cried in chorus.
“Yes,” declaimed Deep Thought, “I said I’d have to think about it, didn’t I?"
@bijouxbroussard It's a famous book called the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was published 42 years ago by the late Douglas Adams, who was from the town I grew up in. 42 is (apparently) the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.
@SW-User Oh, okay. I’ve heard of the book, but from a long time ago. 🙂

@bijouxbroussard It's seriously funny and well worth a read!
