The simplest way to produce hydrogen is by electrolysis of water but it takes a lot of electricity to produce useful amounts. On suggest I think being investigated if not yet operating is to use "surplus" electricity from wind-turbines and solar-panels, when those are producing more than is being used normally.

Correct. When hydrogen is combusted, that is the energy source. The question is: is it worth all the energy that electrolysis needs to make hydrogen from water worth it???

@Pisciatto1 That depends a lot on what the hydrogen is being used for, but it could be derived from wind-tubines at their over-capacity times.
