School is supposed to educate, right? We as people are naturally curious, and all education does is feed our curiosity. We literally spent millions of dollars just to see what was on the moon. So if we are so curious then why the hell do kids hate school? That makes absolutely NO SENSE! That immediately tells you that the school system is deathly ill.

It seems to me when people say something like, "School never taught me what life has," they're usually the kids who never paid attention.

There are so many reasons education In the US isn't prized as it ought to be. One is that kids are young; it's hard to grasp the connections and application of learning to all aspects of life when you've only been around a decade and a half. Learning is a lot like packing for a trip. You need all the right items, but you can't really get your mind off the fun.

There's also our culture. There's a pervasive adolescent attitude in this country that we know everything already and don't need to be told anything. We are based on capitalism; most kids grow up planning their income potential. Fewer seek fulfilling, challenging work in progressive sectors. We're lazy; in our culture, vast numbers of grown men spend their free time playing video games or texting. We've pushed off the average age of marriage, of having kids, of retirement. We'll do anything - anything - in this country to hold onto youth. And for as much as we bitch and moan about oversees jobs and "made in America," few people are willing to stand along conveyor belts or assembly lines. We complain, but we'll take cheap, foreign goods over hard work most of the time.

And the educational systems is sick. It's bloated, concentrated on the wrong things and it's failing kids. When I was in school, we had time for P.E., civics, language, library study, cursive writing, music and all the regular subjects...and still went home at 3pm. Kids in too many states spend whole semesters robotically prepping from standardized test. That is not learning.

The best - the BEST - gift you can give yourself is an education. With the ability to actively learn, observe and assess, anything is possible.

1. Allot of what you learn you will never use again as an adult.
2. They teach you what they think that you should know. Not what you need to know.
Do you come away with???
How to lead a balanced life.
How to be healthy
How to be happy
How to be kind

I agree with you, NameIsMailbox. I think we're both saying that developing the ability to learn goes a long way. This is crucial, as is navigating the social experiment of school. What you learn in the classroom can be as valuable as what you learn outside the classroom and both are fallible sources. Just as you learn irrelevant and often skewed information in classrooms, so too do you hear some very unhealthy messages in the hallways.

The best advice I can give to anyone is, pay attention. In class, out of class, on the field, in a theater, at home, everywhere. We can be told anything, but it's what we synthesize and reason for ourselves that will make all the difference.

(and if you learned 2+2=4 in math, you got more out of it than I did.) ;)

@Oconnor I pay attention very closely to flaws. Mistakes are how you learn and grow. Nobody is ever going to sit down and teach kids how to live their entire lives. The quickest, most efficient way of learning is identifying and observing mistakes. I do learn from school. A few things I learned:
-Motivation goes a long way, and lazy is a lazy word to use.
-Ability to analyze other peoples' behavior.
-Many people ignore their problems or make up excuses... Which is a waste.
-Ways to fix the school system.
-And 2+2=4
Analyzing and solving problems can also be called innovation. The country that holds innovation, holds the most valuable resource on earth.
But yeah you're right. :)

A lot of students say they don't like school because it's not an option for them; it's a requirement. They don't like not having the choice. I also believe that these students don't connect what they learn to their lives personally and might miss that connection for now.

it makes perfect sense. Improving education isn't a priority, at least in my country(USA) so it's no surprise it's pretty crumby. Still I will give them props for at least having a society where everyone is somewhat educated. It's definitely better than not having it.

@FlenFlyys Right, then walk down the hallways when classes let out. They don't sound like they're liking it, and they're talking quite a bit about it.

The kids who hate school are usually the ones who have a hard time fitting in. The social experience is a large part of the education process as well.

I've been through school, and loved it. So do a lot of the kids.

@Flennflyys No pain no gain. Those kids who like it bowed to corruption. I will write you a twenty page essay on why the school system is broken. No joke, give me the word and I'll start. I am extremely intelligent, people who kiss the school's ass are not.

I can tell you right now the school system makes middle school and high school miserable with a the standardized testing and bullshit policies. Not only that, but the environment is so pessimistic. I remember being in middle school (mostly black) and hearing a teacher tell a huge group of kids that half of us would not graduate. So negative.

Nobody in schools now really cares about their education so they just let themselves become morons

I did not learn much in school. Life and work have taught me far more.
