turtles can breathe out of their bottoms through a process called cloacal respiration. This process helps turtles get oxygen from water.
How does cloacal respiration work?
Turtles have a cloaca, which is a single opening in their body that also contains digestive wastes, urine, and reproductive products.
The cloaca has sac-like extensions called cloacal bursae that are lined with blood vessels.
The blood vessels in the bursae exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the bloodstream and the water.
When do turtles use cloacal respiration?
Turtles use cloacal respiration during hibernation when they have low oxygen needs.
The oxygen diffused from water running over them is enough to sustain them until spring.
Other notes
Turtles also have lungs, so they do have to breach the surface of the water to come up and take big breaths to get the oxygen they need.
