Had a horrible day today at work emotionally

I asked for some tasks and responsibilities.

They told me they "expected more from me as a person who has x years of experience" which basically means they are disappointed. And therefore are unable to give me any tasks for the moment.

I know I'm slow to learn things and it takes me longer than others to settle in and be comfortable in a new working environment. I've only been going for 5 days. I know I have lots of experience butttt I feel overwhelmed in a new place and interacting with new faces.

So I told the person this. They insinuated that I'm making excuses, they also have this issue but I seem to just be lost and am not up to the mark.

Anyway. I survived the day with no tears.

It took me one whole year (and some more) to settle into the system in another country, and close to the end, I had become extremely comfortable and fluent in my work. Of course, it's all praise to God. I do not mean to be arrogant.
I just hope time would pass quickly and I can leave.

That's just a classic case of toxic management. They never take accountability, so everything becomes someone else's fault. Honestly, if they are treating you like this by day five, imagine how miserable it will be in a year. Don't fall into the trap of thinking better performance will please them, they'll just move the goalposts and find something new to blame you for. It is absolutely not worth the stress, and I can see how much this is wearing you down. Let them be disappointed. Just use this time to keep learning, protect your peace, and keep looking for a better job.

It is a poor manager who does not recognize it takes a while to settle in.
