I have to start job training again and finish my education
I gave up on them a long time ago, ( at least I have lifetime access) but my parents purchased online courses that could lead to freelance work if I finished and passed the courses. On the knowadays.com courses if I passed the final exams in becoming a proofreader and becoming an editor, I would get a paid work trial period to edit some documents that were short and easier in order to get my feet wet. If I pass that, I will be a full fledged freelancer with a company called proofed.com and get to work on longer and more complex documents for the rest of my life. Work is variable and the more freelancers there are the fewer pieces of work there are to go around, but it is a starting point and something to put on a resume that I would be a certified freelance proofreader and editor.
The second course pathway is skillcrush.com break into tech blueprint where they would have pathway of teaching beginner level basics of visual design and web design/development. The key is to learn the skills and have job coaching and career mentorship. The skills you learned in the online coding school should land you an entry level role in tech. Their motto is to make tech education accessible to everyone especially those underrepresented in tech industry like women, older career changers, people of color, lgbtqia+ etc.
I want to finish both of these as I have lifetime access and I don’t want my parents money to have gone to waste and I wish for a starting point into the professional workforce that has both remote and flexible career options. I have no patience with and am terrible at minimum wage menial jobs especially anything with facing the public and dealing with obnoxious customers.
If I finish these courses with certificates of completion, I could take other vocational courses with certificates of completion and diplomas to learn career ready skills. Then after I can finish my degrees because I will make enough money to go to school on a part time basis and work part time. The Massachusetts Rehabilitation agency only funds education with state schools and the programs I want are online and not based in Massachusetts. I will also have to find scholarships for non traditional students going back to school and scholarships for people with mental health disabilities. I will also look into grants. I may be in my late 30s,40s, and 50s finishing school but better late than never. Granted I would go back in my earlier 30s and now if I could but I have a lot of mental health issues to overcome first and just finishing a course and not getting stuck on it is a major feat. Plus I still have student loans to pay back with my parents’ help. And my parents will help pay for college one course at a time if it is on campus program but I want online. But the stipulation is I have to stick with it and not halfway through give up like I did on my first bachelors degree program, which is more than fair. I should have completed my first bachelor's degree and gone on to a masters within a couple of years.
I don’t even know if my community college credits (I have an associates degree) are any good anymore because too much time had passed since I transferred to a four year in state college over 11-12 years ago. 11 years ago if I am not counting taking the year off school at 21. I also am looking into scholarships by degree subjects. If I have to start over again ok that’s the price I pay for waiting too long to retransfer and I could some general education requirements on study.com, straighterline, sayloracademy, etc.
Ideally I would have two bachelors and two masters degrees in English ( creative writing and journalism) and history ( world history and American history or public history) but since degrees are expensive one bachelors and one masters are going to have to suffice. I will be very proud of myself when I obtain those degrees because my efforts will have been rewarded. Also I miss university learning because I just like to learn for personal enrichment as well as career development.
Some programs I have looked at are Open University( accredited in the UK and US) Athabasca University ( accredited in Canada and US) Southern New Hampshire University online, and University of Maine Presque Isle online your pace competency based programs. I know I can get in because these schools are open admissions or nearly open admissions and don’t require any testing and have almost no requirements to start school snhu and umpi obviously require you have a high school diploma or GED and and little else. So it is my second chance schooling. Employers don’t really care where you got the degree unless it’s not regionally accredited or it’s coming from a prestigious Ivy League or something. The degrees, certificates of completion, and diplomas can open doors. Unfortunately it takes more than a degree nowadays to have a good paying career. But I hope to be working in a career field related to my degrees and this time no student loans. This is why in between my degrees I will take vocational courses to give me something to fall back on while I prepare for my dream careers so I don’t have to take underemployed jobs that are completely irrelevant or continue to be unemployed..
I have been unemployed for many years now and besides taking side gigs I have never held a minimum wage menial crap job for more than several months on very few hours. One job lasted a few weeks and two others a couple of months. Another job lasted one night. If I had just finished my education and stuck to my original plan to major in foreign and modern languages I could have become an interpreter or translator straight out of school in a recession proof career field that was in high demand. I am still going to learn foreign/modern/ancient/classical languages and get certificates and diplomas in the languages. I am planning on making my skills speak for themselves so I will be in demand career wise. I do not interview well but can learn. I will need a portfolio of work and extra skills courses to make my resume stand out. Back up skills are important to have because sometimes situations take a while to pan out. I will have my work by delivering high quality products by deadlines and doing a good job. I plan on working for agencies that connect me with stable work and long term clients instead of having to look for them myself. I am not an endless go getter or hustler. My entrepreneurship skills are not highly developed and I like having some career security. I do not like cold calling or sending random messages or emails to potential clients and contacts. Hell even my LinkedIn is mostly empty except for the junior college I went to and almost nobody has seen my profile. So I have a lot of catching up to do. I will also be sure to try an internship or traineeship as an older student.
