Got the crap scared out of me yesterday at a sub shift.

This is one of those "shits and giggles" stories everyone here might enjoy. It's less political and more anecdotal.

I took a sub shift at an elementary school yesterday. (1st Grade.) I was in the classroom early, doing the preliminaries (finding the lesson plan, the nurse passes, the bandaids) and there were five kids there who had arrived early.
Over the intercom there came a really eerie sounding alarm. It was followed by "This is a lock down. We have an active threat on the property. This is a lockdown."

I didn't shit myself, if some of you are wondering that. I immediately pulled down the rectangular curtain on the rectangular window on the door. Opened it and made sure it was locked on the outside. (Florida law requires all classrooms to remain locked all the time, but it doesn't hurt to check.) Turned off the room's lights and the display board. Checked the blinds on the windows. And the kids had already gone to their safe spot in the room.

So we're sitting there for about 15 minutes. The kids were great. They didn't act too scared and they never said a word.

Someone jiggled the door handle and I almost shit myself.

It was a twenty minute lockdown and then the announcement came that the alert was over.

I gave all the kids stickers because they were all so brave.

Found out later on that the Code Red alert system had some sort of glitch in it. (It was as old as the building itself. 20 years) There wasn't an actual threat.

It was a long day after that. The lesson plan was excellent and the kids were pretty much outstanding. (In case you are wondering, this school was one of three in the county designated as a year round school.)

Have at it, folks.
