Language learning apps

Does anyone here have experience with Duo Lingo or Babbel or similar and any thoughts on how effective such programs are at learning a language?

I tried Duolingo for Spanish twice. First time I didn't do much with it, second time I stayed almost for a year but I started feeling like it didn't provide what I needed. You repeat same stuff over and over in a very simplified manner before you get to more complicated lessons and you don't have an option to train vocabulary with it, at least not in free version, not sure about the paid one. I felt like I didn't progress with it fast enough and choosing obvious answers again and again got boring, ineffective and bothersome after a few months. I need to write full sentences to learn, not just form sentences from words they give me or fill just one word into a sentence.

The one thing I really liked before they changed the app were stories with longer dialogues. They helped me remember stuff better through a particular situation that was in a story.

I've been doing duo lingo for about a half a year now, my 12 yr old has been using it for almost a year. We quite like it.
I've ysed both and duolingo is the best easiest app to use. I love it. And it's free.

What language are you learning?
@justanothername Norwegian just for the hell of it. Will be my third language.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Cool. Good luck. Best way to learn a new language is to live in the country of the plan you are learning .
@justanothername Norwegian was recommended as one of the easiest of the Scandinavian languages to learn for an English speaker.

I could always move up to Gimli and learn Icelandic I suppose. lol It has the largest Icelandic population outside Iceland and even has special immigration agreements worked out with Iceland.

I am given to understand it is harder to learn though since like Faroese is closer to Old Norse and for the same reason of being isolated islands that were not really influenced by outside language and culture.
