Is education necessary for success?

I think there are too many lies and myths around education.
Particularly with regard to university !
Especially the idea that the more exclusive your seat of learning. The more valued you are.
The more worth you are to the world.
I wonder which is worse ?
Being without a degree and looking for work. Or having a degree and looking for work ?

From my relatives experience, degrees doesn't help. The employers do not ask about it, they only focus on what you can do and not do. Past experiences and such. How much responsibilities you've taken on and managed to handle.
