"Took" or "Taken" Which 1 is more "proper"?

I'm writing a speech. More detail: I wrote the speech years ago. I have to update some minor details, edit out what used to be the main details and replace those parts with something else. I want to include a line along the lines of, "It took my mother less time to write her PhD dissertation than it took me to edit this speech."
