Australians are kind of 'laid back' we would say. We're not intense. I can spot Australians at an airport by their face. They look relaxed, like they're on vacation. Sometimes they're kiwis, who are similar.

Our humour, like the Brits and Irish, has a lot of irony. We often say the opposite of what we mean, or something ridiculous, and we all get it. Sometimes I forget and say something stupid to someone from overseas, and they say, 'Really?' Umm... no!

Carl Barron, a comedian, sums it up pretty well.

Carl Barron: I reckon the Australian language is a nationally smart-ass language. You ask someone how they are in Australia, they don't tell you how they are, they tell you how they're not, and you gotta guess the rest.
G'day mate how are ya goin'? Not bad.
What have you been up to? Not much
How much was that? Oh wasn't cheap
Where is this place? Oh it's not far
When are we going? Not long now.

@Wraithorn Not true - that's culture gap. When you ask an American how she is, she might say, 'Great!'
When you ask an Australian and they say, 'not bad' - we hear it differently to you. It's the same as the American 'great'.
@Abstraction Maybe they're just high all the time -- like koalas!! 😂
