Physics, closely followed by maths, then music.

@TheThinker Music and maths are closely related. JS Bach was a fantastic mathematician in the field of music, as Cauchy was in the field of real analysis. Bach constructed fugues, Cauchy constructed series.

@helenS Oh absolutely!
I remember how fascinated I was when I learnt about the maths behind the well-tempered clavier (12th root of 2, etc.) and how it didn't always used to be that way...

@helenS Oddly, though, I never got anywhere with the third element of the classic trio... chess.
Music, maths and chess ability often go together, but, although I know how to play it, and I read various fascinating books on it as a child, I've always been pretty hopeless at actually playing it.

@TheThinker Yes it was so much fun! The music lovers didn't understand the 12th root of 2 thing at all. And it's really easy, you can easily calculate the frequency of each note of a scale.

@TheThinker Nothing more fascinating than watching musicians playing. Nothing more boring than watching chess players playing.

@helenS Yeah, I must confess it holds very little attraction for me in later life.

@TheThinker Here's one more thing math and music have in common: we need a LOT of discipline to learn it. And I was a very disciplined girl.

@helenS They can do, especially to become a truly proficient musician. Remind me, do you play?
And yes, I'm sure you were...
