Did anyone get the cane off the head at school?

Bending over if front of a teacher wasn't all that bad once you got used to it.

@MrsPeterEvans: I didn't find it so. Classroom slipperings were everyday events. It might have been embarrassing if they had been rare.

How were they done then. Dad said a gym shoe was used @Sharon:

@MrsPeterEvans: That's right. We were called out to the front of the class where we had to bend over for (usually) 2 or 3 whacks with a plimsoll on or bottoms. It just stung a bit as you got it.

@MrsPeterEvans: I think you'd be surprised. Most classroom slipperings were as I described but a full blooded 6 (or more) hard whack slippering, like my PE mistress gave, could be very painful.

@Sharon: my gran gsve me the dap as she called it once. It hurt a lot but it was knickers down. Dad said girls were lucky as pleated skirts dampened the sting more than shorts

@MrsPeterEvans: I believe dap is another word for plimsoll. I usually got it knickers down at home and also sometimes at school in the gym changing room.

Pleated skirts can dampen the sting (how did your dad know? ;) ) which is why we usually had to lift our skirts for it at school. We were always flashing our knickers, deliberately as well as accidentally, in those days so it wasn't embarrassing to lift our skirts for the slipper.

@Sharon: he was a teacher and was allowed to punish for a few years before it was banned. He said you weren't allowed to raise skirts though some girls had very short skirts anyway. What knickers did you have??

@MrsPeterEvans: Whether teachers were allowed to raise skirts was purely academic, they did what they wanted in those days.

We didn't have regulation knickers but we wore full backed briefs.

There was a bit of hypocrisy in schools there. Girls often had to lift their skirts, in front of boys and girls, to be slippered for the offence of flashing their knickers to the boys.
