Car maintenance question?

I have a 2004 jeep liberty that will not idle or start on it's own unless I rev the engine for 20 minutes. Pep boys charged me 89 for an engine inspection and I'll be damned if I let them charge me 589 for the full maintenance. They say I need to do a fuel system clean up, like my fuel injectors but I wonder if I can get by with just the fuel injector cleaning fluid. Also they say my idle speed control motor needs to be replaced which I'm sure I can do myself.

Thoughts?

So after the engine warms up it idles ok? And runs ok?

@gregloa yup. Totally. Nothing else happens

@CuddleFeesh sounds like the coolant temperature sensor. If it is not working it can’t tell the computer that the engine isn't warmed up yet. Thus the computer can’t control the correct cold air fuel mixture until it warms up. Which is why it will idle and runs ok after it warms up.
I would take it to an independent repair shop. Those chains always overcharge you for simple crap.

If it won't idle or stay started, there's likely a fuel issue somewhere. If it didn't start at all, that would be electrical. Had an old 94 Explorer that needed revving at longer lights or it would stall, and it was something to do with the fuel injectors (can't remember specifics). I'd suggest having another professional look at it if you doubt them.

@raysam363 its mostly the cost and it's no guarantee itll fix the problem. I've repaired everything on my car by myself just to avoid costs

Try fuel injection cleaner first, then see what happens.

Could also be a fuel pump or fuel filter.

If when it’s trying to run when you start it have someone tap the bottom of the gas tank in different spots. If it starts running better, it the fuel pump.

I had a Jeep Cherokee. If it is reading that a lot of the cylinders are down it very possible it is the TPS sensor

Scotty Kilmer. My mistake

Pep Boys are largely idiots, at least by me. I'd find a reputable local guy.

I once complained about my car taking a while to go into gear. Place turned up the idle screw and charged me 50 bucks. Ha.
