I have studied Latin, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, and Chinese, but I never met anybody who speaks any such language, so I never learned any of them well. And that is so even though two of my brothers married Mexican wives.
I gave up on Arabic when I learned that it is so hard that even native speakers can't reliably get it right. I gave up on Chinese after 13 lessons and I still had not learned how to compose a sentence. The first 13 lessons are on how to draw the characters.
