Both Rodents.
Both family Sciuridae.

Chipmunks are confined to North America and Asia.
Squirrels are everywhere except the polar regions.

Chipmunks like forresty areas.
Squirrels prefer grassy areas.

Both animals hibernate. Although a Squirrel is more likely to eat plenty then sleep through the winter living off it's fat stores whereas a Chipmunk will wake and eat before going back to sleep.

Squirrels like their homes up in the trees.
Chipmunks prefer their homes at the base of trees.
