My grandpa had a Labrador and my dad taught him tricks, he’d listen for the farmer’s tractors and when they’d park in front of the little general store to have their morning break, that dog would take off and go to the store, scratch on the door and one of the farmers would let him come inside. The dog would do at least 3 tricks and when he was done the farmers would take turns buying the dog a treat, a Hershey chocolate bar or a ice cream sandwich with chocolate in it. He did this 6 days a week (the store was closed on Sunday) and it didn’t seem to hurt him.
@cherokeepatti my dog snatched a hershey bar once. I panicked and took him to the vet. They told me that for a dog his size, 60ish lbs, he would need to eat about a pound of chocolate to be in any kind of trouble.

@SooperSarah And they say it has an accumulative effect...but that dog never seemed to have gotten sick from all the chocolate....about 300 servings per year. Now if he ate a pan of fudge pans left on the table to cool down, that might be another story.
@cherokeepatti they metabolize it a lot slower than we do. I'm not sure how long it hangs around in their system.

@cherokeepatti I have been at the vets Patti, and heard their advice, which left the impression with me that how they regarded a "pet",and how I saw it,were light years removed from each other 👍️

@pedrohedgerow well I’m wondering why Grandpa’s dog didn’t die from chocolate as much chocolate as he ate. Maybe certain dogs are more vulnerable to getting sick from it. I had a Siamese cat that would beg for chocolate and he would eat one M&M or equivalent of a Hershey bar...just a taste, that was the only weird food he craved.
