Is anyone here old enough to remember when TV’s first started becoming a common household item?

I’m wondering how long it took for the television to become a priority over conversation. Like, how it became acceptable to say, “Quiet, I can’t hear the TV”.

I remember getting our first TV. It was a black and white back then. We weren't allowed to talk when it was on. But, back then we only watched it for the evening news.
