At a private or charter school in the states, generally no (the institutions might have their own rules). Certain states have their own alternative certification requirements that don't always require the teaching degree or allow you to work while attaining it. Getting the teaching degree will get you a much broader range of options once out and will make you more marketable in a field that is still enamored with the traditional route.
