What does this mean when applying for a job?

If you inquire about any possible openings for a job and they reply back with are you happy to join the books as a casual? Does this mean they're willing to take you on?

Casual means they will hire you if you want to work on a call in basis only. No regular hours but when they need you.

@summerlove OK Here in Canada being on the books is a legitimate hire while off the books means you are being paid for work but more on a contract basis.

ask them ?

@SW-User I just don't want to embarrass myself by not knowing what means. I applied to work in an early childhood centre as I'm nearing my degree.
I'm just guessing, but it sounds like they might be asking if you're available for part-time or on-call work.
