@summerlove OK Here in Canada being on the books is a legitimate hire while off the books means you are being paid for work but more on a contract basis.

@SW-User I just don't want to embarrass myself by not knowing what means. I applied to work in an early childhood centre as I'm nearing my degree.

I'm just guessing, but it sounds like they might be asking if you're available for part-time or on-call work.
