Ever see other kids get the slipper at school?

Getting the slipper from the gym teacher was a regular occurrence at school. It was often done in a light-hearted manner but she had a strong arm and it didn't half sting. However, it was great fun watching other girls get it especially if they were good-two-shoes.
I remember one such occasion when to hurry us up changing she said the last one out would get the slipper. One of ours girls named Annette, a really studious and well behaved girl, mysteriously found a certain part of her underwear was missing, no doubt hidden by an ill-intentioned girl as a prank, and by the time she found it she was last out.
Miss was waiting at the changing room door for her and despite all her protestations, Annette had to touch her toes and get a whack with the slipper. She gave a yell has the slipper made a resounding sound on her bottom and came out very red-faced with a few tears in her eyes, to be comforted by her friend. As for the rest of us it had been a welcome light entertainment before we went to class.

I can imagine a situation like the one you describe where it could be administered lightheartedly or at least semi-seriously. I have a vague memory that at Junior school a large group of got the slipper in that almost tokenistic way. But my memory of gym/PE/sports mistresses at High school is more about the casual, almost indiscriminate way they doled out the slipper, as if bending over for a few whacks with the slipper was an utterly normal and uneventful moment. Over the years I have struggled to define the difference between getting the slipper in gym, and getting any other corporal punishment at school, including the same sort of slippering in class. And the only way I can explain it is that - in my high school - such a gym punishment was not surrounded by any sense of 'event', of 'occasion'. As the recipient it gave you not one iota, not one moment, of martyrdom!

@GailCob Male Gym teachers were the same, certainly at my school. Also, most of them were former Rugby players, so there was nothing casual about the impact!

@GailCob Yes,I agree. At my school our sports master was also the deputy head. There was always a vaulting horse handy and he slippered us almost routinely for anything he regarded as 'tomfoolery'. He was Welsh, a rugby player [suprise, suprise] and had made our bums sting for quite a while afterwards.
To be sent to him for the cane was a far more formal affair with the short lecture, selection of a cane and then over the chair for 4 or 6.
