Should I really give up on my social and online lives in order to invest the time and effort I need on my degree?

Depends on where your social and online lives lead you. Are you able enough to pay your bills without a college degree? If yes, carry on. If not, who said you can't have social life and earn a degree at the same time. There are some amazing people and professors at the college. Socialiazing with them would be more productive and efficient than bunch of random people on the internet.
