It's been banned in Britain for many years but getting the slipper or (worse) the cane was a part of school when I was there.
Wondered just how many people got it or still get it at school?

It's not been banned for as long as many people think. Although it was prohibited in state schools in 1986 it continued to be legal in private schools until 1997.

@Oldmanjimbo 1998 in England and Wales; 2000 in Scotland and not until 2003 in Northern Ireland.

@Oldmanjimbo How many British people attended private schools? They are in the minority, and I would say they would be even more of a minority on a site like SW. I haven't encountered anyone on here who went to a private school. I have several real-life friends on here but they all went to normal schools (for want of a better term).

@Sharon That's something I am very opposed to - different dates for different parts of the UK. If they are going to introduce new laws, they should come into force on the same date in all parts of the UK, full stop.

@NankerPhelge currently around 7% of British children attend private schools. The figure has varied but been around that percentage for years. Why do you think fewer people on SW would be privately educated than in the population as a whole?
Oldmanjimbo · 90-99, M
@NankerPhelge why are you opposed to different parts of the UK making decisions at different times. Like many countries around the world we have a system of devolution.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Oldmanjimbo Because I do not believe in devolution. I believe the United Kingdom should be just that - the UNITED Kingdom. And that's all I have to say about that.

To answer your other question, people who are privately educated are a small minority, and I also form the impression that British people in general are in the minority on SW.

@Oldmanjimbo so much confusion over dates wen cp was banned in English private schools. It was given its first reading in 1987. It passed its final reading late un 1998 but due to an amendment made to the Bill it was not law untill Ist January 2000 but many did dtop using it before this date
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@chikki All the people I know who were in school in 1987 said that was when it stopped. But that wasn't in private schools because I don't associate with people who went to private schools, therefore I cannot say for sure when those stopped using it.

Indeed, and I was stunned when I first discovered that about Northern Ireland.
