It's a regional thing like pop/soda i think. I never heard custodian as a word until we moved and I was in middle school.
@Shade70 Does the same apply for parents? Or do parenents only address certified teachers by last name?

To me it is a matter of respect. I am addressing someone in professional capacity, not as a friend.

We had to say "Ms Last name" today's student probably say "Hey you"
